FoodCarbonScope™
FoodCarbonScope™ is a web-based software tool for easy modeling and interactive analysis of life-cycle energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in food products. FoodCarbonScope can be used to quantify and optimize carbon footprints based on a full life-cycle modeling of food products.
FoodCarbonScope™ is packaged with an extensive life cycle inventory (LCI) database covering a broad range of agricultural production in various parts of the world, regrigerated storage, processing and cooking, packaging, transport models, energy sources, and domestic/international emission factors (including accurate electricity emission factors by grid region and country). FoodCarbonScope™ also provides automatic domestic/international transport distance calculations.
The modeling and analysis include these key features:
- Energy use and GHG emissions in agricultural production -- including all inputs such as fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation, electricity/fuel, and freight transport.
- Comprehensive accounting of non-energy GHG emissions at the farm level due to issues such as waste/manure management, crop residues, nitrogen fertilizer use, enteric fermentation, flooding of rice fields, etc.
- Carbon emissions and sequestration in agricultural soils due to land-use changes and agricultural practices at the farm level.
